October 2014 - Maintained Focus

October 22:  Check out this amazing review of BAD TABOO from Blues Blast Magazine!  What can I say?!!  It is an actual review, you can tell that the writer sat down and really listened to every aspect of the album.  It just so happens that he liked the album, which is a bonus! But these days, it's really hard to get an honest to goodness review.  Some writers take what is on our press release, cut and paste it on their article and call it a review.  When a write up comes to our attention, like this one. It makes it worth our while that we - the band - go through so many sacrifices to stay on our path. Thank you, Blues Blast Magazine and all of you who follow us in this journey. We got shows coming up.  November is quite an interesting month - http://www.carolyn-fe.com/index.php/band/shows.

**RIP, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo (Ottawa) and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent (St. Jean sur le Richelieu) - We stand on guard for thee.**

October 21:  What a trip that was!  We drove in to Toronto on Friday, October 17.  Had supper with my cousins at this amazing Filipino restaurant called "Cusina Manila" where they served "Kamayan" style, that means eating with your hands and the food is served on banana leaves.

The next day was showtime!  Matinee at Theatre Passe Muraille.  Raoul Bhaneja, Divine Brown, the musicians: Jake Chisholm, Tom Bona and Chris Banks, Fiona Jones (stage manager) and the Theatre Passe Muraille staff were amazing!  This is a Toronto that I have not seen.  I tried living in Toronto three times and went back home to Montreal.  But these good folks made me see a different side of Toronto.  Check out the photos on Facebook.  These good folks made room in my heart for Toronto!

The production, 'Life, Death and the Blues' was written by Raoul and it tells the story of of owning the Blues about "how someone of a different ethnic background can honestly relate to this type of music, find it moving, and make it a part of their life." (A direct quote from http://hyemusings.blogspot.ca/2014/10/theatre-review-life-death-and-blues.html ) His story is quite similar to mine and I connected.  What an honour it is to see my story on stage being told by a fellow Bluesman who lived the same thing. Then as part of the production, he called me up onstage from the audience. I sang a song of Big Mama Thornton, talked about how she influenced me and talked about my belonging to the Blues. I then sang, Original Sin.  All I can say is, WOW! Someone had to tell the story and Raoul did it, shared it with the public and now I can own it too! My cup runneth over! Even more, what an honour it is to be billed as a Blues Legend! Again I say how humbled and forever grateful am I for those who include me in their process with the Blues.

Right after the matinee, my brother picked us up and we had another Filipino Kamayan Feast with my nieces along with some of his friends.  What a way to end a short trip to Toronto.  One of the best visits I have ever had.  We drove back to Montreal right after supper, got home at 2am as if finishing a gig in Montreal itself!

I want to go back to Toronto and discover more.  Toronto, I am falling in love with you.

October 13:  Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all!  Lots to be grateful for.  Bad Taboo is charting #1 on USA's Blues 411! Then this coming Saturday, October 18, I will be back in Toronto at the Passe Muraille Theatre to be a guest at Raoul Bhaneja's production of "Life, Death and the Blues".  Such an honour to be asked to sing and be part of this production that talks about Blues as it pertains to other cultures. Even more, what an honour it is to be billed as a Blues Legend! I am humbled and forever grateful for those who include me in their process with the Blues.

October 8:  Just got some great news!  The band is charting #2 on Blues411.com (USA)  It is so exciting to see our work being recognized and acknowledged!  I cannot express how happy I am!

October 1: When a decision is made, maintained focus is urgent in order to keep actions moving forward.

September was quite an active month. Television appearances, radio interviews and the tunes from Bad Taboo charting in the US, UK and Germany...and it continues to do so. We are currently #3 on Blues411.com (USA) as I write this entry.

We have a new addition to our team. Mr. Luc De Bouvries – our agent. He will be the point of contact for booking the band. We are quite happy with him representing us and look forward to playing lots of shows.

Did you notice our new website? It was completely redone by Litratista - Hope you like it. We certainly do!  Not only is Litratista our official photographer, he has hidden talents with creating web sites.

I look forward to October's activities with shows in Toronto and Montreal every weekend.  If you click on the actual event, you can download it to your icalendar!

  • October 4 brings me to Toronto's Hugh's Room to sing some old dirty and naughty songs in a BluesIn Toronto Production. Come see a Blues show where nasty words are allowed to be sung! We are 5 Blues-women +1 that will titillate your nervous parts and make you giggle like a 14 year old.  No need to bring soap to wash our mouths.

  • October 18 brings me on stage at Toronto's Theatre Passe Muraille for Raoul Bhaneja's production of Life, Death and the Blues! A combination of theatre and music, not a musical- a hybrid theatre/concert event. What an honor it is to be able to combine my experience as a theatre actress and a Blues singer.

  • October 10 & 31 brings the band home to the House of Jazz Laval and Montreal.

As we continue on with work on our 4th album. I cannot help feel slightly anxious again. Putting something out there for the public to hear and see has got to be one of the most difficult things for me, especially when the words are mine. Ooof! It's like bearing my soul and I have to admit, it is a phase that I go through with the guys when we are writing new tunes. But then, once it's done the words no longer belong to me. You – our dearest fans are the ones who can interpret them as it pertains to your life and experiences.

We keep on keeping on. Lately, I've made some personal decisions that affects my day job but it is all for the greater good. It will keep me focused on the band and keep us moving forward. Dreams do come true after a lot of smart work. Overnight successes are had by continued perseverance. No matter how tired, no matter how difficult the task, the decision was made to be a band – and so we maintain the focus.
